Texas trigger law bans abortion — even in cases of rape, incest, or fetal anomaly

Providing an abortion in Texas is now a felony. There aren’t even exceptions for rape, incest, or fetal anomaly. Every Republican in the State House and Senate approved this law. And Gov. Greg Abbott signed it into law in 2021, knowing it would almost certainly become a reality.

The goal of the “trigger ban” was to ensure that when Roe v. Wade was overturned, it would trigger a total criminalization of abortion in Texas as soon as possible – 30 days after the court decision was finalized. After the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade, the countdown was on.

Our state lawmakers—including Gov. Greg Abbott—wanted it this way. They planned it, they voted for it, and they celebrated when it passed.

But most Texans don’t agree with Gov. Greg Abbott and his cronies. As a matter of fact, 9 in 10 Texans oppose a complete ban on abortion—which is exactly what this law does.

Gov. Greg Abbott won’t stop at making abortion a felony. He is openly strategizing about using this moment to go after even more of our rights.

The Texas Extremists’ Anti-Abortion Agenda

  • Ban travel to other states for abortion care
  • Restrict access to birth control and emergency contraception
  • Criminalize free speech about abortion
  • Remove the only remaining exceptions to the ban — for patients with life and health-threatening pregnancies
  • Increase funding for fake clinics to manipulate and shame pregnant people
  • Attack other rights based on the right to privacy, including access to birth control, marriage equality, and medical care for trans people

FIGHT THE TEXAS ABORTION BAN

SB 8 bans abortion as early as 6 weeks and puts a $10,000 bounty on anyone who helps someone get abortion care. Now more than ever, we need unapologetic abortion rights advocates to lay the groundwork to defeat anti-abortion lawmakers.

Chip in to organize Texans to restore abortion access in our state. The organizing we do today determines the gains we make in 2022.
