Pregnant youth detained by ORR deserve freedom

Pregnant unaccompanied youth from across the country who have recently been detained are placed in a single ORR  facility in Texas. The facility has been flagged by advocates and even the administration’s own health and “child welfare” officials as medically inadequate.

Current regulations and policy require ORR  to ensure access to all pregnancy-related care, including abortion. But the Trump administration has announced it will propose changing a regulation regarding abortion access for unaccompanied youth. Any attempts to restrict abortion access for youth in immigration shelters will be devastating.

These young girls — some as young as 13 — are alone in these facilities, without family there to advocate for or protect them. They deserve freedom, access to compassionate care, and control over their own bodies. We as a community have a responsibility to step up.

Take action by scheduling and speaking out during an “EO Meeting” with ORR!

How to schedule your EO 12866 Meeting:

  1. Visit the ORR website and click the link that says “Request EO Meeting.”
  2. Fill out the request form, and be mindful of the information you provide, as it will be available to the federal government.
  3. You’ll receive an email with call-in information when the meeting is scheduled.

The calls are just 30 minutes and take place over the phone. Officials from OIRA and ORR attend these calls. They are in listening mode only and do not answer or ask any questions.

What is an EO 12866 Meeting, and why is it important?

An EO 12866 meeting is your opportunity to address pending federal regulations while it’s still being reviewed by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA).

These meetings matter because the government should know we will not forget about these young girls or allow them to be denied care. These meetings also slow down the process for ORR to introduce and adopt a rule restricting abortion care for youth detained in these facilities because they will have to take every meeting requested. Finally, by holding these meetings, we can build a strong administrative record to oppose any rule that could restrict abortion access for youth.

FIGHT THE TEXAS ABORTION BAN

SB 8 bans abortion as early as 6 weeks and puts a $10,000 bounty on anyone who helps someone get abortion care. Now more than ever, we need unapologetic abortion rights advocates to lay the groundwork to defeat anti-abortion lawmakers.

Chip in to organize Texans to restore abortion access in our state. The organizing we do today determines the gains we make in 2022.
